Maritimo represents a defining chapter in FiveBlade’s design story. During his time as Maritimo’s Head of Design from 2016 to 2024, and Managing Director from 2021 to 2024, FiveBlade founder Tom Barry-Cotter led design and new product development through a period of strong commercial success. It was within this environment that the FiveBlade design philosophy and process were refined: insight-driven design, multi-purpose platform thinking, common-component strategies, and modular systems that support both versatility and production efficiency. The result is a depth of experience in large-scale boatbuilding and practical, manufacturing-led design that continues to shape FiveBlade’s work today.

Repositioning an Established Brand Through Category-Defining Design
The X Series helped create a new product expression within an already established brand. What began as an effort to broaden the Maritimo offering beyond its traditional flybridge models became a transformative design initiative – one that re-energised the brand, introduced a highly original spatial concept, and delivered strong commercial results in a challenging market.

Established a Distinct New Model Range
The X Series helped shape a clearly differentiated sport coupe range within the Maritimo portfolio, giving the brand a fresh and contemporary offer without losing its core identity. Initially intended to complement the existing flybridge range, the models quickly developed into a major success story in its own right, ultimately overtaking flybridge sales soon after release.

Turned a Market Constraint into a Competitive Advantage
A key innovation of the X Series was its aft cabin configuration, developed to address the accommodation advantage typically associated with pod drive competitors. By creating a highly efficient layout with access from both the salon deck and swim platform level, the design unlocked valuable additional living space within a shaft-drive platform – delivering a point of difference competitors could not easily replicate.

    Delivered Strong Commercial Results
The X Series achieved significant market traction during a down period for Maritimo, with more than thirty units sold. Just as importantly, the launch brought renewed global media attention to the brand after a quieter period, helping to restore momentum not only for the X Series, but across the broader Maritimo range.

    Reignited Brand Relevance Through Design
More than a successful product launch, the X Series demonstrated how design can drive brand renewal. Through a ground-up approach to product innovation, the Maritimo X60 and X50 helped reposition the brand, expand its audience, and create a commercially successful new direction for the business.
